Avenue Profile - Making the Match
In a fast-paced city of mergers and acquisitions, Susan Rose and Jennifer Heller make deals that last a lifetime

Susan Rose and Jennifer Heller are two chic, busy New York women. They live on the Upper East Side, attend scores of charity events, and drop their kids off at school. Rose previously worked for a nonprofit agency and would often fly to Eastern Europe to do consulting work. Heller has an extensive corporate background and was the director of human resources for MTV Networks. Recently, when Rose renewed her passport - she was about to jet off to London - she paused before filling in the blank labeled "occupation". There were a number of titles she could have written, including president of Rose Heller, Inc. What she wrote, though, was "matchmaker."

Rose and Heller, as professional and urban as they might be, are two homespun matchmakers who work to bring love and companionship to successful, busy New Yorkers. They are the heart and brains behind a burgeoning business, and their story is a personal one.

Rose was always good at setting people up, taking into consideration interests and attitudes. Wanting to see their friend happy, she introduced Heller to a friend of a friend. The day Heller became engaged to that man was the day the pair went into the matchmaking business.

Rose and Heller's exuberance for what they do makes it very clear that the line between business and pleasure is a fine one. They value quality over quantity and focus on working with people they feel they can help - people who are open and ready to enter a relationship but have exhausted their own social networks for dates. When interviewing potential female clients, they invite the women to their homes and provide a setting that allows for openness and honesty.

"We have warm, loving homes, so they feel comfortable," says Rose. "It gives them an energy and environment that's set just for them. There's absolutely no judgment on our part. We're able to diffuse their nervousness and get to the essence of what they're about; who they are."

Susan Rose and Jennifer HellerBeing conscientious about making people comfortable, their approach toward interviewing male clients is a bit different. They invite men to sit for a chat at cool, upscale bars and lounges. Because both Rose and Heller are clearly in happy, stable relationships of their own, the men feel at ease to open up to them.

"Susan has an uncanny intuitive instinct, and I have the discipline of someone who's worked in the corporate world, " explains Heller, the CEO of the company. "We take what we do really seriously, that's why our names are on the door. We treat people with respect, and confidentiality is the hallmark of what we do."

With such an intimate, personalized interviewing process, their clients basically end up with good friends who are professional headhunters for happiness. Rose and Heller host dinner parties with a variety of guests, married and single, and put a great deal of thought and time into the introductions they make. The duo works solely by word of mouth - their friends, husbands, and acquaintances constantly refer people to their service.

"We're part therapist, part mom, friend, director and coach, " adds Rose. "We never stop working, because work is fun. What we do permeates our lives."

It's hard to blame the pair for being workaholics when their pursuit is based entirely on bringing lasting joy to people's lives. In a city where everyone is always on the go, Rose and Heller provide an urban spin to the age-old pursuit of love and happiness.
